Sunday Creativity at Fully Booked Part 2 (or, When Children Make Awesome Stories)

The heroines of 'The Fourth Princess Rescue'

We capped off our demo class for The Creativity Project (read my previous entry for Part 1 of the class!) with the 'Make Your Own Adventure Challenge,' where we asked our participants to come up with a fairytale story of their own. I was interested to see how this group would take to the activity and I was so pleased with how they responded to it! Once I had gotten the ball rolling through an opening narration, they were soon offering their ideas and suggestions, and putting twists and turns in the story I never would have expected.

These impressive kids reminded me of how easy and effortless it is for young children to create, once put in an atmosphere that encourages them to let their imagination run wild and just BE! We whipped up the story in less than 10 minutes, and acted it out afterwards. It was a terrific show and I had a blast facilitating the activity :-)

The Fourth Princess Rescue
A Fairytale Adventure

The beautiful princesses meet a crocodile!
Once upon a time, there were three princesses. Their names were Princess Nicole, Princess Tanvi, and Princess Maja. They were searching for the fourth princess, their sister Elizabeth, who had been captured by an evil witch and then was transformed into a magical donkey.

They went to a secret forest, where they saw a crocodile that snapped then roared at them.

“Stop! We are your friends! We are not here to harm you.” Princess Tanvi said.

“We are searching for our missing sister. Will you help us?” Princess Nicole asked.

The crocodile nodded. “Yes,” she said.

The crocodile brought them to a brave pirate who knew the way to the evil witch’s island. He wanted to help, but there was a problem: all three princesses and the crocodile couldn’t fit into his small boat!

“I have a suggestion,” the pirate said. “One princess can ride on the crocodile, and the other two princesses can ride with me.”

Thus they set out for sea. All was well till they suddenly found themselves in the middle of a great storm, with waves 100 feet high. The boat capsized and the princess riding on the crocodile nearly let go. But they were saved by a beautiful, kind fairy with purple wings who came to help. With a twirl and a wave of her wand, she calmed the seas and brought them to the good knight.

The good knight taught them moves and tricks to defeat the evil witch. A soldier then marched up to them.

“Attention!” She said, and saluted.

"Attention!" The soldier said.

The soldier also taught them more moves and tricks to defeat the evil witch. Another fairy came to join them to help them rescue the fourth princess. They were finally ready. They traveled to the evil witch’s island.

They knew they had to look for a cave but didn’t know where to go. There were three tunnels. The soldier stepped forward and studied the tunnels.

“Attention! We will pass through the tunnel at the center.” She said confidently.

The tunnel at the center was the right one. They were very near. Just as they were about to enter the evil witch’s cave, the pirate jumped in front of the group and laughed.

“I am the evil brother of the evil witch. I will defeat you! Ahahahahaha!” He cackled.

The good knight and soldier defeated him. The pirate fell to the ground, unconscious.

Shlippity-shloppity-shloo!
They were finally in the witch’s cave! The evil witch raised her arms to cast a spell, but the two fairies raised their wands and quickly said, “Shlippity-shloppity-shloo!” The evil witch became a tiny frog! The two fairies took her powers away.

The magical donkey brayed. “Hee-haw! Hee-haw!” She said.

The two fairies waved their wands again. The magical donkey transformed back into a beautiful princess. She and her three sisters embraced. The good knight, soldier, crocodile, and two fairies joined in.

By this time, the pirate had woken up and was sorry for being evil. His evil witch sister turned frog was sorry too. They all became friends, had a big group hug, and lived happily ever after.

THE END.

-----------------------------------

Didn't they come up with a wonderful story? All the exciting elements in the story (the magical donkey, the secret forest, the problem (and the solution) of the too-small pirate ship, the height of the waves, the rescue of the fairies, turning the witch into a frog, the revelation  of who the pirate really was, etc.) were their ideas! I lay no claim whatsoever to how cool the story turned out. Bravo, kids! You are a dazzling reminder of why we love what we do so much :-)
